The term “gymmnocarpa” means naked fruit. The sepals on this rose species fall off early, leaving the rosehip bald or ‘naked’.
Common names are problematic; this species is called Baldhip Rose or Wood Rose. There is a different specie with the common name Wood’s Rose.
